Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
ADHD is a neurobehavioral disorder characterized by inattention and/or hyperactivity and impulsivity diagnosed in children before the age of 12. Prevalence of ADHD in children and adolescents worldwide is between 5% and 10%. Recent studies estimate that more than 50 % of diagnosed cases persist into adulthood , with lifelong detrimental impact on social and academic skills. The burden of such disease is lifelong and carries significant risk ,if not treated well, like: decreased life expectancy, comorbidity with other psychiatric disorders and substance abuse , along with reduced quality of life for the affected children and their families .If not treated attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) can affect much more than just a child’s ability to sit still or focus. It can have long-term effects on things such as substance abuse, driving ability, eating habits. As a matter of fact ,kids who are not treated for their ADHD can have social struggles, poor peers’ relations , greater substance use, more car accidents, more risky behavior and less likely to attend and then graduate from school and college . For adults, untreated ADHD also affects job performance, lifetime earnings, marital satisfaction, and likelihood of divorce, risky behavior and may lead to criminal behavior at the end.
Parents and families who have kids with ADHD often focus on the potential risks and side effects of medications and ignore the many potential benefits of such treatment. They ignore the risks and side effects of not treating ADHD. In fact, the risks of not treating ADHD outweigh the potential side effects of stimulant and nonstimulant medications, which can include loss of appetite, potential slowing of growth in childhood, and increased blood pressure or heart rate. These side effects in majority can be treated and patients can be monitored to avoid Long term complications.Treatment of ADHD can help relieve the symptoms and make the condition much less of a problem in daily life. It can help the patient go smoothly through his day to day life with much less trouble and live more of normal life. ADHD can be treated using medications or cognitive therapy, while combination of both is often the best.
Present medication approaches most often include stimulant and non-stimulant pharmacotherapy. Stimulants such as methylphenidate show the largest positive effects on the symptomatology in ADHD, but unfortunately, almost quarter of the diagnosed individuals do not respond to medication treatment, and/or pharmacotherapy can be accompanied by physical and psychological adverse effects. In addition to medications, different therapies can be useful in treating ADHD in children, teenagers and adults. Non medication therapy is also effective in treating additional problems, such as conduct or anxiety disorders, that may appear with ADHD. Such therapies like Psychoeducation ,behavioral therapy, parent training and educational programs, social skills training, and cognitive behavioral therapy can have big positive impact on patient treatment and over all progress specially if done along with medications. People with ADHD should eat a healthy, balanced diet. Some people may notice a link between types of food and worsening ADHD symptoms like eating too much sweets. Supplements have no documented benefits in treating ADHD signs and symptoms. Interventions or activities, which benefit children, in general, are also relevant for children and adolescents with ADHD and may alleviate the ADHD symptomatology. Regular physical activity (PA) are known to trigger a wide array of physiological events that can lead to improvements in physical and psychological well-being as well as physical and cognitive functions including the memory domain. Finally, parent of kids with ADHD play major role in helping their kids manage ADHD. Below are tips for parents with kid with ADHD:
- Create a structured environment and Make a routine for your child and stick to it every day.
- Organize your Kid life ,create a quiet place for your child to read and do homework. Keep his room and your home organized.
- Try to divide tasks into manageable pieces.
- Limit electronics and media usage like TV, video games, computers as these all encourage impulsive behavior. Encourage your child to spend more time outside.
- Encourage exercise and make it part of their daily routine: physical activity burns excess energy in healthy ways. It also helps a child focus their attention on specific movements. This may decrease impulsivity. Exercise may also help to improve concentration, decrease the risk for depression and anxiety, and stimulate the brain in healthy ways. Many professional athletes have ADHD. Experts believe that athletics can help a child with ADHD find a constructive way to focus their passion, attention, and energy.
- Emphasize healthy sleep pattern: going to bed is difficult for children suffering from ADHD. Lack of sleep exacerbates inattention, hyperactivity, and recklessness. Helping your child get better sleep is important. To help them get better rest, eliminate stimulants like sugar and caffeine, and decrease television time. Establish a healthy, calming bedtime ritual.
- Encourage wait time : teach your child how to pause a moment before talking or replying.
- Promote loud thinking: Ask your child to verbalize their thoughts and reasoning when the urge to act out arises.
- Believe in your child: your child may struggle with ADHD now, but it won’t last forever. Have confidence in your child and be positive about their future.
